Preventing Type II Diabetes

" 17 million adults in America have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
" Another 16 million Americans have prediabetes, otherwise known as glucose intolerance.
" Lifetime risk of developing type 2 diabetes in people born in 2000 or afterwards is 32.8% for men and 38.5% for women, 50% in many minorities.
" The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes is predicted to be 300 million people by the year 2025.
" Coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and cerebral vascular disease affects up to 75% of men and 57% of women with type II diabetes. The direct and indirect costs due to type 2 diabetes care in the year 2002 was estimated at $132 billion

" Some people benefit from medication such as metformin, which reduces liver sugar so that in some levels decrease. However study showed that lifestyle changes are more effective than people who just use metformin without lifestyle changes.
" Medicines that decrease glucose intolerance or reduce glucose absorption into the body have been shown to reduce the development of type 2 diabetes
